The Corbin Redhounds extended their January record to 3-0 with a 65-52 win over the Bell County Bobcats at Gilliam Gym last night.
Corbin (9-5) pulled away with a big third quarter, outscoring the Bobcats, 18-11.
Seniors Ryan Swim and Ryan Tate along with freshman Josh Crawford led the Redhounds out to a 47-35 lead. Tate and Crawford had six third quarter points while Swim had four points from the inside.
The Redhounds led by as much as 12 points in the first half but the Bobcats mounted a late rally and trailed at the half, 29-24.
In the opening period Corbin grabbed the early lead and never trailed but the Bobcats did tie the game four times.
With the score tied at 7-7, the Redhounds went on a 6-0 run when Swim scored two baskets in the paint while Crawford added a hoop from close range.
It was the Redhounds biggest lead of the game in the first period. However, Bell County rallied late in the period to comeback once again and tie the game.
Shawnta Zachary hit a pair of free throws while Trey Goins and Robert Warren scored to tie the contest at 13-13.
A three pointer by Tate at the buzzer allowed the Redhounds to go to the bench with a 16-13 lead.
Corbin started the second period on fire with 11 straight points, taking a 27-13 lead.
And, it came from five different Redhounds. Crawford hit the first basket followed by Tate. Clint Cashen added a basket Deke Barley and Kyle French.
However, the Bobcats were not ready to fold and scored eight unanswered points as Zachary hit two free throws followed by a Bryce Mickey lay-up.
Senior Jeremy Sanders scored on a shot from close range and Mickey added a basket to close the gap to 27-21.
Barley added a Corbin basket and Sanders hit a three pointer at the buzzer. The Redhounds went to the dressing room with a 29-24 lead.
Bell County continued its run in the third quarter as they cut the Corbin lead down to two (33-31).
Corbin answered at that point with a 14-4 run in the final six minutes and took a 47-35 lead by the end of the third period.
The Redhounds put on a free throw clinic in the final quarter as they hit 9 of 13 free throws.
The Bobcats pulled within 49-41 before coach Tony Pietrowski took a time-out to regroup.
Crawford led the Redhounds with 17 points while Swim finished with 16 points.
The Redhounds will play at Evarts Friday night in a doubleheader with the Lady Redhounds, then have a rare Monday night game when they host a tough Pineville Mountain Lion team led by sophomore Daniel Day.
