News Journal Classic I
The first of three News Journal Classics was played tonight at Williamsburg with the Jackets hosting Lynn Camp. Why three Classics? I brought up the ideal last year but we could never get Corbin, Whitley County and Williamsburg to play on the same day.
This might work for now. Lynn Camp held off Williamsburg to win the first classic 75-71 with Williamsburg’s Aaron Cunningham and Lynn Camp’s Cody Mobley putting on a show. The two combined for 63 points, 10 three-points and some excellent play.
The first quarter was Mobley against the Jackets. The junior scored all 12 points for Lynn Camp, while the Jackets had balanced scoring and led at the end of the first quarter, 13-12.
Williamsburg won the second quarter as well and led 35-31 at the half. They actually let an eight-point lead disappear with some untimely mistakes. Williamsburg should have walked off the floor at the half with a double-digit lead.
Sophomore Tyler Wagner and Mobley kept the Wildcats in the game in the second quarter.
The Wildcats, known for their high tempo game under Anthony Pennington, outscored Williamsburg 25-15 in the third quarter. Mobley had three of his 3-pointers in this quarter. But, he got help from Jonah Mitchell and Wagner.
Williamsburg trailed by 10 points with 2:35 left in the period, but the Yellow Jackets rallied to within six (56-50) by the end of the period.
The Yellow Jackets was able to get within two several times in the fourth quarter but couldn’t bring it all the way back. Everytime they had a chance to tie or take the lead, they through the ball away or took a not-so-wise shot. They were their worst own enemy.
Lynn Camp held on to win this game, but it was a game that got away from the Yellow Jackets, who probably played the better game.
Mobley and Cunningham really put on a show. Cunningham finished with 32 points while Mobley added 31. Jacob Teague gave Cunningham plenty of support on the inside with 21 points and Wagner had 17 points for Lynn Camp.
The difference might have been Brian Smith, who tossed in 10 points. Williamsburg didn’t have that number three player tonight.
