News Brief: Corbin Tourism moving offices to downtown

On Tuesday, Dec. 13, during a special called meeting of the Corbin Tourism and Convention Commission, a vote was upheld to relocate the tourism commission’s offices from the Corbin Center off of I-75 Exit 25 to the old L&N Railroad Depot building, located on Depot Street in downtown.

Tourism Director Maggy Monhollen said the move will be beneficial, allowing her to have quick access to downtown business owners as she continually works with them to plan and execute downtown events.

The commission also voted to allocate approximately $68,000 from the general tourism fund to pay for additional work to be done on the future site of the Farmer’s Market Pavilion at the corner of Main and Monroe streets in downtown.

Pending an itemized proposal being submitted to the contractor, the funds will pay for the removal of topsoil and the installation of gravel and fabric that will allow a concrete pad to be poured without the risk of buckling due to excess ground water that was recently discovered underneath the lot.

Monhollen is still hopeful for a spring or summer opening for the pavilion, but weather will play a significant factor in the coming months.
