Corbin Intermediate student Jeremy Elliott continues to put his mark on the national scene when it comes to archery. Elliott, a fifth grader at Corbin Intermediate qualified for the state archery meet with a first place in the regional tournament at the University of the Cumberlands last month.
Then at the state finals he took first place once again qualifying him for the nationals also held in Louisville. He made his mark on the nationals as well, taking first in the fifth-grade division and second overall among the elementary archers, fourth through sixth grade
“I think Jeremy is very good, he is very talented,” said Coach Patty Smith. “He does do a lot of tournaments which helps in his preparation for the state and national tournaments.”
Corbin also qualified in the team event as well at the regional level and advanced to the state tournament.
Archery is not something new to Corbin. “We started this about seven years ago,” said Smith. “We were a pilot school from the beginning. It has grown immensely. There were thousands of kids at the national tournament.”
Jeremy, the son of Brian and Angela Elliott, began shooting when he was much younger. “There was a tournament that came to London and my dad told me I should go. I have been shooting since I was three years old,” Elliott said. “It is a lot of fun. You can win things and you get to meet a lot of new friends.”
“It is something to have a student from Corbin to place second in the nationals,” said Smith. “It was just exciting and we were all tickled to death.”
“There was a 1007 shooters in the elementary division,” said Smith.
As a team, Corbin also fared well. After winning the region they qualified at the state meet by finishing in the top ten. “We qualified based on the points we scored,” said Smith.
Then to top off the season, Corbin scored 29th out of 56 teams at the national competition. “There were teams from every state,” she said. “It was real exciting to represent Corbin at the national level.”
