Mother, ‘baby sitter’ charged with smoking marijuana around five-month-old
A complaint of individuals smoking marijuana at Corbin Manor Apartments resulted in Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies finding two adults smoking the drug in the present of a five-month-old infant.
According to Sheriff John Root, deputies arrested 20-year-old Autumn Martin and 43-year-old Aaron Byers on charges of endangering the welfare of a minor and drug related charges.
Root stated that deputies arrived at the apartment off of American Greeting Road about 5:15 p.m.
Upon interviewing Martin and Byers, deputies said Martin admitted to smoking marijuana just prior to the deputies arriving.
Deputies reported finding a glass jar inside the baby crib in the bedroom, containing a substance suspected to be marijuana, along with a glass pipe.
“The female subject stated that the male subject was babysitting her five-month-old daughter while she was smoking marijuana,” Root stated.
Martin was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor, public intoxication – controlled substance, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Byers was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor, public intoxication – controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Martin and Byers are each being held in the Laurel County Detention Center on a $5,000 cash bond.
Social services was contacted and the child has been placed in the custody of Martin’s relatives.
