Moses receives Distinguished Alumni Award from University of Kentucky Mining Engineering Foundation

Deborah Bishop Moses

On April 29, 2017, third time retiree, Deborah Bishop Moses traveled to Lexington, Kentucky where she was presented with the Distinguished Alumni award from the University of Kentucky Mining Engineering Foundation.

Deborah, who is a Williamsburg native and lifelong resident, graduated from Whitley County High School in 1976. She went to the University of Kentucky, where she graduated in 1981, receiving a Bachelor of Science and Mining Engineering degree.

She is a Registered Professional Engineer in both Kentucky and Tennessee and is also a Professional Land Surveyor in Kentucky.

Deborah held many positions in her career, starting at Cal-Glo Coal Company in 1980, where she managed both underground and surface surveying crews. The company was soon purchased by TECO Energy Corporation, and was renamed Gatliff Coal Company, eventually becoming one of many subsidiaries under TECO Coal Corporation. Deborah was very beneficial to the company as her duties evolved into permitting, land dispute settlements, contract mining administration, contract trucking administration, impoundment construction management, un-mined mineral tax filings, internal safety and environmental audits, and more.

In 2009, Deborah retired from TECO Coal Corporation and began working as a consultant at ECSI, Inc., a civil engineering and surveying firm, where she managed the local office for three years.

In 2012, she began working at Mountainside Coal Company and just recently retired from there as Engineering Manager.

Deborah is currently serving as vice chair of  the University of Kentucky Mining Engineering Foundation, is a member of the Kentucky Coal Association and the Kentucky Association of Professional Surveyors. She served as a member of the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors from 2006 to 2010, and currently serves as vice chair of the Whitley County Tourism Board and is involved with Reclaiming Futures and the Whitley County Juvenile Drug Court as a tutor and mentor.

Deborah is also a member of the Pleasant View United Methodist Church where she teaches Sunday School and is the church organist. She is currently chair of the PVUMC Finance Committee. Additionally, she serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the Pleasant View Cemeteries Perpetual Care Association.

Deborah was married to Archie Moses until his death in 2003. She has one son, Dr. Dan Moses, a daughter-in-law, Dana Moses, and one granddaughter, Elle.
