Missing 10-year-old found safe Friday afternoon
The search for a missing 10-year-old autistic boy in Whitley County came to a happy ending shortly before 3 p.m. when the boy was located unharmed in the western portion of the county.
Whitley County Emergency Management Director Danny Moses said that the boy was reported missing after 2 p.m. from his home off old Highway 92W near Haar Wood Products.
"The parents reported that they were asleep and woke up and the child was missing," Moses said.
The parents and some neighbors searched the immediate area and when they didn’t find the boy called 911.
Moses, Williamsburg Fire and Rescue, the Williamsburg Police Department, the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department and Kentucky State Police all responded to the scene and searched the house and grounds.
Then they requested help from the Woodbine, Goldbug, Emlyn, Pleasant View and South Whitley volunteer fire departments.
Moses said there were about 15 emergency responders on hand and another 50 – 60 were enroot when the boy was found. In addition, Kentucky State Police had also requested a bloodhound to help track the child.
"The grandmother was driving by a creek and saw the child sitting in it playing," Moses said.
About 15 minutes earlier, rescuers had searched the area where the river runs under the new portion of Highway 92W and were going east down the creek but the child was located upstream and west of it.
Moses said the boy was safe and sound and that he was glad the incident had a happy ending.
"That is always good when it’s a child," he added.

Thank you Sandra. This was the first time anything like this has ever happened to us. We have locks on the doors and windows. We have taken every precaution possible to prevent something like this from happening. They said “The parents reported that they were asleep and woke up and the child was missing” I had woken up at 6:30am, fixed him breakfast, watched cartoons with him and at around 12:30pm fixed lunch. I hate they made it look like I had been asleep all day while he was up. Because he is nonverbal there was a delay before I called 911 because I wanted to make sure he wasnt hiding near the house before I reported him missing. When he was found, my mom was walking, not driving, when she found him. And he was hiding near a stream about 50 yards from the house. It would be amazing if they could all have tracking devices. Thank you again for your kind comment.
This was a happy ending, California wasn’t, I want to do all I can for tracking devices for autistic children and whom ever can’t speak or know direction.
With all my heart with a autism, non-verbal, 13 yr old son, I pray for him and all the family’s!!!
Thank you, Sandra Wardwell
