Mavis F. Broome
Mavis F. Broome, 84, of Williamsburg, departed this life on Sunday, August 6, 2017, surrounded by her family, at Baptist Health in Corbin.
She was born on June 8, 1933, to the late Charlie and Cordelia (White) Farmer in rural Marion County, MS.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Katie Farmer, two sisters Elmira Cooper and Roslie Bass, all of Columbia, MS, and one brother Colbert Farmer of Jackson, MS.
Mavis was a graduate of Bunker Hill High School, Pearl River Junior College, Mississippi College, Eastern Kentucky University, and earned additional credits from Tulane University and Cumberland College.
She began her teaching career in New Orleans, LA for seven years, followed by twenty-seven years in McCreary County, as well as teaching undergraduate evening courses in special education at Cumberland College for almost a decade.
She was a fifty-year member of First Baptist Church of Williamsburg, serving many years as chairperson of the daycare committee. She also headed up the church’s food pantry committee in its early days. She was a member of the same Sunday school class for over fifty years.
Mavis is survived by her husband John, her daughters, Kim White (Fred), Erica Harris (John), Shelleigh Moses (Ronnie), all of Williamsburg, grandchildren, Erin White Wells (Phillip), Katelyn Harris, Haley Harris, Amanda Moses, and Jake Moses, all of Williamsburg, Tyler Harris (Hannah) of Corbin, Kelsey White of Jeffersonville, IN, and Richie Moses of Kodiak, AK; surviving sister, Ester Laird (Grover), of Fulton, MS; sister-in-law, Sarah Broom White of Marietta, GA. as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 9, at First Baptist Church of Williamsburg from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., with funeral service beginning at 6 p.m. with Dr. John Broome and Rev. Ande Myers officiating.
Burial will follow at the Highland Cemetery in Williamsburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family has set up a scholarship fund for special education majors at University of the Cumberlands.
