Marx HVAC/The Heat win Corbin softball league championship
For the bulk of the new millennium, the Corbin Industrial Softball League has had one team stand above of all others. Marx HVAC/The Heat, sponsored by Mark Napier of Corbin, has won the Corbin league eight times since 2005, earning a record of 101 wins to just nine loses. Championships came in 2005, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10, 12, and now 2016.
This year’s tournament was a thriller, as semi-final action included the NWO (Barbourville) beating Pizza Spot (Williamsburg), and The Heat (Corbin) beating the Shockers (Barbourville) to set up the championship showdown between NWO and The Heat, who had split games during the regular season.
Facing pitcher Jimmy Hendrickson, NWO started the first inning off scoreless while Brandon Lawson would home run making it 1-0 for the Heat.
Chance Hendrickson led the third inning off with a single, followed by another home run by Lawson to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Heat.
After holding NWO scoreless again, the Heat scored on hits by Stephen Hunter, Jeff Sparks, Jimmy Hendrickson, and Chance Hendrickson, all to be capped off with a grand slam by Lawson.
NWO managed to get on the board in the fifth after back-to-back hits by Billy Carson and Daniel Bays, followed by a two-run error.
The Heat then tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth with hits by Brandon Hedrick, Conrad Cessna, and Josh Coppock to bring the score to 9-2.
The sixth inning saw NWO go scoreless again just before the Heat closed out the 10-run mercy rule with another home run by Lawson, a hit by BJ Foley, and a walk off home run by Tyler Hendrickson to bring the final score to 12-2.
