Man sues local charity for fall from chair

A Corbin man is suing a local charity group over injuries he suffered when he fell out of a “defective” chair while playing bingo at the group’s Corbin facility.

Through local attorney Maxie Higgason, Christopher Alan Gadlage filed a civil complaint in Whitley Circuit Court Oct. 29 against Women Helping Others (W.H.O.) – a charitable organization that regularly runs bingo games in a building off Cumberland Falls Hwy. According to the complaint, Gadlage went to

W.H.O. to play bingo on April 24, 2008. A chair he was sitting in collapsed and he fell to the floor injuring his back “and various other parts of his body” in the process.
Gadlage claims he had to undergo surgery, hospitalization and take medicine to treat the injuries, amassing $29,459.43 in medical expenses.

The lawsuit claims W.H.O. did not comply with state and federal laws because it “failed to supply and maintain a safe chair” for customers and “failed to warn [Gadlage] of the chair’s defective and dangerous condition …”

The unnamed manufacturer of the chair is also included as a defendant in the lawsuit.
Gadlage is asking for a trial by jury.

Neither W.H.O. or the manufacturer of the chair has filed a response yet to the lawsuit.
