Man gets 30 days in jail for stealing from neighbor
A Corbin man, accused of allegedly breaking into a neighbor’s outbuilding and stealing some items from inside, pleaded guilty to the crime last week.
Walter E. Sloan, 57, was initially arrested April 21 by Corbin Police after they say he jumped a fence at 316 W. 8th Street and went behind an outbuilding on the property and started tearing off panels from the building. He then took several items from the building and tossed them over the fence onto his own property where police later located them.
Sloan was charged with second-degree burglary and criminal mischief. According to an arrest citation, Sloan admitted to police he tore panels off the building and took a jack.
The owner of the property apparently witnessed Sloan committing the crime and called police. Authorities essentially caught him in the act.
In Whitley District Court in Corbin last week, Sloan pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of criminal trespassing and criminal mischief. Whitley District Judge Fred White sentenced him to six months in jail, of which he will only be required to serve 30 days. The balance was probated. Sloan will also be required to pay court costs.
Corbin Police Officer Kirk Mays investigated the case. He was assisted by Patrolman Jeff Hill and Sgt. Glenn Taylor Jr.
