Evan Lay was introduced as Lynn Camp’s new head coach during a press conference Wednesday afternoon.
“I just want to thank God for this opportunity. Without him I would not be here,” Lay said. “I want to continue the success that they have had in previous years. I hope that with my energy and passion for the game that I can carry that on.”
Lay was introduced as the new coach by Lynn Camp Athletic Director Rob Ledington, who happens to be the former Lynn Camp head baseball coach.
“I am very excited to have Mr. Evan Lay. He comes highly recommended,” Ledington said. “He is a local guy. He has played in the 13th region. He understands what it is going to take to be competitive in this region. He’s young. He is energetic.”
Lay played his high school baseball at Knox Central, and his college ball at Asbury College.
He served as the Knox Central Middle School head baseball coach this past season for a team that made it to the final four in the state tournament.
He is currently a teacher in the Knox County school system.
Lay said that he hopes to be a players coach.
“I hope that they know I am here for them, and not just here for me. It’s not about me. It’s about the kids. It is about them succeeding and advancing on in the game that they love,” Lay said.
“I promise you I will give my 110 percent every single day. I will show up every day with a passion for this game. I want them to play the game right and show a respect for the game that we have all grown up loving. We are going to go out there and fight to the very end no matter what.”
Lay acknowledged that he is a young coach, who will also be learning from his players, the faculty and the school’s administration.
“I am going to hopefully share my knowledge of the game with everybody around me. Hopefully, we can become not only an All ‘A’ competitor, but also a regional competitor, and make people respect this program and make them be scared of this program,” Lay noted.
“I know that there are some good players here. I hope to bring them all together and compete as a team at a very high level.”
Lay added that not only does he want his team to be great players, but that he also wants them to become great men.
“Throughout all this, I just hope they learn, have fun, and also I want them to compete to the very end,” he said.
Principal Anthony Pennington said he is excited to bring in someone new to the Lynn Camp family, who is a real positive.
“We want to continue the excitement that our baseball team had this year. That very good season. We have a lot of talent coming back next year,” Pennington added.
Last season, the Wildcats went 10-10, and finished as the runner up in the 51st District Tournament. They lost in the first round of the 13th region tournament to Middlesboro.
