It was another week, another win for the Lynn Camp Wildcats football team last Friday night when they improved to 4-1 on the season with a 45-6 victory over the visiting Jenkins Cavaliers.
Up to this point the Cats have primarily utilized a run attack to get the better of their opponents on offense, but they went to the air against the Cavs, with junior quarterback Dylan Brown connecting with receivers for a total of 167 yards.
Senior Austyn Weddle can lay claim to 110 of those yards, which included one reception for a touchdown. Austin Maier and Dalton Cook also had TD receptions on the night.
Running backs Cook and Brenton Medlin also did their part on the ground, combining for 77 rushing yards, and each ending the night with one rushing touchdown.
“I feel like we are becoming more versatile,” said Head Coach Allen Harris when asked about switching from the run to the pass. “We’re showing that we’re not just one dimensional, and teams are going to have to prepare for that. I feel good about where we’re at, but there is still a long way to go.”
Next up for the Cats will be a road trip to face the 2-2 Blue Devils of Jellico, TN.
These two teams played each other very close in 2014, with Lynn Camp coming away with the 22-18 victory. Coach Harris said that the Blue Devils look to be improved from where they were a year ago, and he is expecting a tough test from them this week. “Jellico is a lot better than they have been,” he said. “They are pretty well rounded, and have some experienced players coming back from last year. It’s not going to be easy for us. We are going to have to control the tempo of the game, and apply some pressure on defense.”
Speaking of defense, Harris said that he has been pleased with how his defensive unit has progressed since the beginning of the season, and he is expecting to see good things out of several returning starters on that side of the ball this week.
“I think we’re getting better every week,” Harris said of his defense. “We had a big stand last Friday against Jenkins, and hopefully we will be ready for Jellico’s passing attack this week. They throw the ball quite a bit, so we will have to prepare for that.”
If you are planning on making the trip to Jellico Friday to see if the Wildcats can pick up their fifth win in a row, kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
