LOOKING BACK
After watching the game between the Redhounds and Knox Central last Friday evening, I began to take a little inventory of what the Redhounds have in their arsenal for the remainders of the season.
In a general assessment, I would say they have a will to win, I feel they are extremely well coached. They play harder than any team I have seen this season.
Individually they contribute in different ways, Travis Smith is an excellent ball-handler, and can generate offense and create his own shot, Travis is a clever defender who comes up with many deflections and steals and is a clutch performer and a team leader.
Matthew Taylor is an active defender, a tough rebounder and is very strong with the ball on offense.
Brody Freeman is extremely quick offensively and defensively and a good finisher on drives to the basket. Brody also is excellent from the free throw line.
Taylor Jones is a slasher to the basket and plays great defense, Taylor is very hard nosed and comes up with a lot of loose balls.
Hunter Sizemore is yet another tough hard-nosed performer for the Redhounds. Hunter is a very good rebounder and defender and can be effective offensively.
The Hounds are getting good bench play from Kyle West, Robbie Igo and Zack Farley.
The Redhounds, now 14-4, will ride a seven game win streak into the district game with South Laurel Tuesday.
Wildcats
I am concerned for the Wildcats of Kentucky as I look ahead to Saturday’s match-up with Georgia at Rupp Arena. Their lack of depth becomes even more of a concern as the season wears on. Brandon Knight is playing too many minutes and is taking a beating. Terrance Jones is becoming less a factor.
It was a big win over South Carolina, but not a thing of beauty. These are the dog days of basketball season with league games which resemble hand-to-hand combact. This Wildcats team has not been constructed for physical play.
High School Basketball
A glance around the state tells me the elite of high school basketball once again rests in the Louisville, Lexington areas with Louisville Eastern, Ballard, Jeffersontown, Lexington Tates Creek and Henry Clay.
Of course, you have Scott County under Coach Billy Hicks and Dixie Heights out of the ninth region and Bowling Green out of the fourth region. A sleeper might be Perry County Central out of the 14th Region.
It’s not a large contingent, but I really like Redhound student section, which I believe they are refereed to as the Corbin Crazies that are located directly behind the Redhound bench. They are active, they are loud, they are entertaining, they are supportive and they stay within the confines of good sportsmanship. Great Job guys!
From the Past
This week’s player from the past is Joe Gambrel. Joe played in the early sixties and was an outstanding running back in football and a point guard in basketball. Joe once had a 65-yard touchdown against Somerset called back, when the referee blew the whistle on a fake hand off to Rodger Bird and killed the play. Joe Gambrell always a Redhound.
