LOOKING BACK
The Corbin Redhounds have shown in its two wins so far this season that the key word has been resilient. Tates Creek bounced back from two scores down only to see the Redhounds respond by driving for a touchdown and a 21-14 win.
This past Friday evening saw the never-say-die Redhounds overcome a nine-point half-time deficit to come away with a 38-33 win over South Laurel.
I was particularly impressed with Nick Howington, Grant Grigsby and Matt Jewell on defense and of course on offense, no one plays harder or tougher than Brady Foley. Ty Cobb plays very steady and avoids the big mistakes. Cobb also came through in the clutch completing big passes to Hunter Grubb and freshman Jake Coppock.
Grubb is an outstanding athlete, and Coppock as a freshman is really an excellent lead blocker and shows promise of being a strong running back. Another freshman who shows great promise is linebacker Tanner Powers.
Powers was a terrific running back as an 8th grader last year, but has not been used in that capacity to any extent this season.
There are several outstanding freshmen on the Redhounds roster and several are receiving significant playing time.
The Redhounds road ahead gets no easier. Next week is an open date, followed by Wayne County, a district foe on September 30. Wayne County has probably the best team the Cardinals have put on the field in several years. The open date will give Mitchell Frederick an additional week to heal and recover from this first week back. Mitchell played well against South Laurel, and really adds athleticism to the team. It will also allow Brady Foley and Matt Jewell and others on the team who have taken a pretty strong pounding over the first half of the season can also use the week off to heal some.
Class of ’62
A group of young ladies from the class of 1962 were recently scouting around for a place to hold a class reunion last week when they ran into a group of old geezers (of which I am one) passing the time of day. The ladies were Joan Denham, Sharon Brazel and Peggy Cobb (at least those were their names in ’62).
When I think of 1962, I think of a logo in the window of Redhound fans “Two over the blue in ‘62”.
The football season of ’62 followed the class of ’62 graduation, but was a very memorable season for the Redhounds.
The Redhounds beat Danville and its great running back Sammy Burke at mid-season behind the outstanding running of Scotty Russell.
Advancing to the playoffs, the Redhounds were to play one of their all-time games. The Highlands Blue Birds had won 55 straight games and they were a solid favorite to defeat the Redhounds.
It was not to be as the Redhounds used a Tommy Kring field goal and long touchdown run from scrimmage by Joe Burton to win, 10-0. Alls well did not end well, however, as Danville gained revenge in the championship game by beating Corbin 13-6.
By the way I hope the lovely ladies of the class of ’62 have a fun time at their reunion.
Sneak Peak
I got a sneak peek at this year’s Cumberland Falls Invitational Tournament this week. That’s right, basketball is closer than you think. This year’s in state team will include Coach Patrick Robinson’s Williamsburg Yellow Jackets, Jackson County under new coach Jeff Parrott, and the perennial state powerhouse, Scott County, coached by former Redhound Coach Billy Hicks.
Blue Ridge High School out of the Carolina’s will be one of the out-of-state teams. Evangel Christian, out of Shreveport, La, will be a second of four out of state teams and will feature Trent and Trey Taylor, the sons of former All-Stater in football at Corbin, Greg Taylor.
The Corbin Redhounds of Coach Tony Pietrowski will host the tournament, which will be held one week earlier this year.
