LOOKING BACK
The Redhounds were able to make short work of Casey County on a Friday evening when the fans would pay tribute to the seniors on the Redhound team of 2011.
There are eight seniors on this year’s squad and each makes significant contributions to the team.
Number 2 – Mitchell Frederick, a safety on defense and a wide receiver on offense is perhaps the quickest and most athletic player on the team. Frederick suffered an injury early in the year that has limited his playing time. He has big play capability and will be a big plus going into the playoffs if he remains healthy.
Number 9 – Ty Cobb has been able to throw the football very well when given adequate time. Cobb needs a clear lane to throw, but throws a tight spiral and can be every effective.
Number 17 – Tommy Bailey has played very well on defense and has demonstrated the ability to catch the ball. Tommy has been effective on special teams.
Number 19 – Brady Foley plays with as much heart as anyone who ever wore a Redhound jersey.
Brady plays both offense and defense with reckless abandon and certainly shows stellar leadership qualities.
Number 22 – Derek Mahan is a tough kid who does all the little things to help you win. Derek is a punter, defensive back and an excellent special team’s player.
Number 60 – Nick Howington is one of, if not the strongest player on the team, Nick is a stalwart on the defensive line and will be counted on heavily in the playoffs.
Number 65 – Cody Boyd is another strong physical player on the Redhound line. Cody is an excellent blocker on the defensive line and has been a steady player throughout his Redhound career.
Number 74 – Big Marquis McGee, at 6’ 2” and 250 pounds, he gives the Redhounds a large presence in the middle of the defensive line. Marquis was injured early in the year, but is back and should be an asset in the playoffs.
These eight young men are playing high school football for the final few games over the next few weeks.
In the late sixties a young man named Gene Mosley moved to Williamsburg with his wife “Pete” and his two young boys, Rick and Steve.
I got to know Gene through softball, when he played the game for over 30 years and became umpire and chief for the state of Kentucky at the end of his playing career. Mosley then became Recreational Director in Williamsburg before retiring a few years ago.
Gene was inducted into the ASA Softball Hall of Fame a few years ago. Gene and I became good friends over the years, but Gene had many friends that he would greet with a big smile, a firm handshake and a big bear hug.
Gene passed away Oct. 20 and I join many of his friends that will miss this good man.
As the Corbin Redhounds’ basketball program nears the beginning of a new season, practice has begun in earnest. Coach Tony Pietrowski runs the absolute most effective practice sessions of any coach I have seen. Coach “P” makes efficient use of his time in the development of each individual player and at the same time incorporates that individual’s development into a team concept. I can see several players, and I mean almost any kid on the floor is capable of making a contribution to this year’s team.
Travis Smith is the leader, as an experienced, talented senior, who is tough and levelheaded. I would not trade Smith for any other player in the 13th region.
I really like Robbie Igo who is playing tough and who along with Smith can lead this year’s team to possibly another trip to Rupp Arena.
I look for Harlan County and Clay County to be very good in the 13th Region and I think Williamsburg will be competitive as well.
