LOOKING BACK
The fighting Redhounds of 2010 are seeking their place in Redhound lore. It has been 28 years since the Redhounds have brought home a state championship trophy. If the ‘Hounds come out Friday evening with the same fire they exhibited against Prestonsburg they will give themselves a chance.Matthew Taylor and Brady Foley are as hard nosed as any players I have seen this season,If you give Ty Cobb time to throw, he is very accurate and he has a bevy of receivers. Josh Coppock, Josh Jewell, Mitchell Frederick, Roman Mitchell, Taylor and Foley are all capable receivers. The coaching staff also has a balanced running attack. The only concerns I have with the offense was in the first quarter against Prestonsburg when the ‘Hounds couldn’t seem to get out of their own way by sustaining penalties and a few high snaps from center, but they seemed to get that straightened out.The defense was fabulous with tremendous pressure on the Prestonsburg quarterback from Wes Tipton, Cody Harp, Matt Jewell and Grant Grigsby,
Roundball action
The balls are bouncing for Redhound basketball for the 2010-11 season as Coach Tony Pietrowski readies his troops for defense of their 13th Region crown.
The Redhounds played Lexington Lafayette on Saturday at the Arena. The Generals were a big team with a 6’8”, and a 6’6” forward and one about 6’3”. Sophomore Robbie Igo for the Redhounds is 6’ 4” or so and played very tough on the boards along with 6’3” Travis Smith, a junior who will be a force for the ‘Hounds this year.
Hunter Sizemore looked strong on the boards before sustaining an ankle injury. Brody Freeman and Taylor Jones looked very solid at guards.
Lafayette won by seven points in a hard fought defensive battle.
The Redhound round ballers can expect help from the football program at the end of football season.
Matthew Taylor should bring athleticism and experience that will give the team a huge boost.
Kentucky Wildcats
The Kentucky Wildcats will (by the time you read this) have played in the Maui Invitational and hopefully done well. Coach John Calipari seems to be very concerned about his young bunch of players and how they will respond to the pressure of a demanding schedule. I am confident Coach Cal will get the ‘Cats to where they want to be. In my opinion, Calipari is the best coach in the country, but he does get a little cheesy.
With two weeks to heal nagging injuries and prepare a game plan, can the football Wildcats possibly end Tennessee’s 25-year dominance?
They will never have a better opportunity. Look for a great game out of Randall Cobb and the ‘Cats to pull out a win. I cannot believe I wrote that!
The Redhound from the past this week comes from the late eighties and was an outstanding all-state player. It was Corey Reeves, who manhandled a favored Danville team to advance deep into the playoffs. Corey went on to play at the University of Kentucky were he was an outstanding tight end.
A special hello to my buddy, Bill Leick, down in Maryville, Tennessee as he is a little under the weather.
