LOOKING BACK
Coach Steve Jewell and his staff went into the game with Lexington Christian Friday evening with a very sound game plan. The idea was to maintain control of the football. Run the football, move the chains and run the clock and thereby keeping the ball away from a very potent LCA offensive unit. It worked very well for most of the first half, but LCA struck with a punt return just before halftime and the momentum did a U-Turn.
LCA came out the second half and went to a no huddle, hurry up offense and completely dominated the second half, winning 41-21.
Lucas Witt, the LCA quarterback was very impressive running the no huddle offense. As everyone knew going it, Dominique Hayden was a load.
For the Redhound, once again it was Caleb Watkins, Matthew Taylor and Ryan Fritts who provided most of the offense. Aaron Manns stepped up on defense along with Watkins, Taylor and Steven Smallwood.
I look ahead to the playoffs, which will begin for the Redhounds Friday as they face the Morgan County Cougars.
My feelings are that too many teams are included in the playoffs and strings the high school season out too long.
The Kentucky Wildcats football team was simply unable to stop Anthony Dixon as the Mississippi State running back simply ran over, around and through the Wildcat defense and thus wrecked my prediction of the Cats not losing another game this season.
The game was actually very evenly matched and I thought could have gone either way.
I received a nice letter last week from Fred Copeland that was offering congratulations to Coach Brad Harris and the Corbin Redhound golf team on their regional championship season. Fred is a past member of the Tri-County Country Club and now lives in the Central Kentucky area where he works with his sons Fred Jr. and John in the real estate business.
The future of the Redhound football program looks very bright as the eighth grade team finished in the semifinals, losing to an excellent Bowling Green team in a game that was very close throughout the first half.
The Redhound seventh grade team brought home the seventh grade state championship with a 36-14 win over Lone Oak.
Brent Jackson is the head coach of the eighth grade ‘Hounds and Wendall Foley is the head coach of the state champion seventh grade Redhounds. It is men like Brent and Wendall that are the life line of the Corbin High School football program, they mold these kids and instill in them the pride and tradition at an early age.
At the risk of leaving someone out, I picked up some names of these future Redhounds.
8th Grade players, Taylor Waddle, Derek Woolum, Zack Henson, Joey Shelton, Cai Jackson, James Lunday, Donnie Mills, Ben Gosser, Jesse Liford, Chris Middleton and Kavin Mindel.
For the 7th grate state champions, we have Caleb Rollins, Corey Taylor, Harrison Reedy, William Reedy, Jake Coppock, Dustin Woolum, Zack Engle, Dalton Anderson, Derek Eubanks, Brady Farris, Maliki Saunders, Tanner Powers, Evan Griezel, Austin O’Neal and Saylor Rasmus.
I was happy to see Coach John Caliperi recognizing former Wildcat coach Joe B. Hall by asking coach Hall to join the team on the bench during the Blue-White scrimmage. Coach Hall is a great representative of the Wildcat program. Hall has never been given his due as a coach and recruiter.
