LOOKING BACK
It was a beautiful evening this past Saturday as the Redhound Varsity Club brought three teams in to join the Redhounds for the Pigskin Classic.
In the first game, I was really impressed with the Knox Central Panthers as they were able to put away Karns High School out of Knoxville.
I have heard a lot about Jeffrey Canady, the candidate for the title of Mr. Football for Kentucky and I certainly agree he is the real deal.
The second game the Corbin Redhounds were matched with Lexington Christian Academy.
As I watched the team warm up, I was somewhat surprised that Lexington Christian had only 29 players dressed out for the game.
The Redhounds suited up 61 players for the game, Assuming the weights in the program are listed correctly, this is by far the largest team physically the Redhounds have ever put on the field.
The difference in the game was not determined by size however; it was determined by the speed of a young man who played for Lexington Christian named Justin King.
It was a good game and with a break or two the Redhounds could have won.
I have noticed with every team I have watched play in this early part of the football season, that they are all employing what I have heard called “the pistol” formation. That is where the quarterback lines up about three yards behind the center with the running backs flanking the quarterback and about a yard deeper.
I have yet to determine the advantage to it, but one disadvantage appears to be an awkward passage from the center to the quarterback, particularly early in the game,
In the Corbin-LCA game, each team experienced fumbles on their first offensive play.
Austin O’Neil, a 5’9”, 160-pound sophomore had three good plays from his corner back position as anybody could have last week when he knocked down passes on two downs and intercepted the third pass by Lexington Christian. Cai Jackson kept pressure on the quarterback all night.
Redhounds
The Redhounds travel to Lexington to play Tates Creek this week, and will play at Danville the following week. Coach Steve Jewell and his staff will have the Redhounds ready as they are facing a demanding schedule.
Helping ALC
Travis Smith and Jordan Akins have joined Isaac Wilson on the basketball team at Alice Lloyd College. Travis was the leading scorer for the Redhounds the last two years and Akins was a three-year starter at Whitley County.
Coach J.R. Hammond is building a very competitive team. The Eagles also have 6’10” Terry Muse, who has developed and gives the Eagles inside presence.
Doing my part
Although I don’t fish, I am part of the fishing team made up of my son and grandson, Scott and Dylan, who caught the fish and my son-in-law, Chad, who cooked the fish. I did my part, I ate the fish.
‘Cats
The Kentucky Wildcats will open the football season Sunday against the Louisville Cardinals. I think Kentucky will upset the Cardinals. It is not that I feel the ‘Cats are that good, it is that I feel Louisville is over rated.
