London man jailed in connection with southern Laurel County shooting Wednesday

Justin Dean Hampton is charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree criminal abuse, tampering with physical evidence and falsely reporting an incident.

A London man allegedly shot at two people during an alleged altercation Wednesday while he was dropping off his two-year-old son at residence in southern Laurel County.

Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies charged Justin Dean Hampton, 22, of London, with three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree criminal abuse of a child ages 12 or under, tampering with physical evidence and falsely reporting an incident.

Hampton was arrested about 2:29 p.m. off Robinson Creek Road, which is about eight miles south of London.

Laurel County 911 received a complaint about a dispute involving shots fired at male subjects after an alleged altercation, according to a Laurel County Sheriff’s Department release.

During their investigation, deputies learned that Hampton had apparently gotten into the altercation with two men while he was there dropping his two-year-old son off with the child’s mother, the release stated.

“He pulled a Colt .22 pistol and fired a round in the direction of the two males,” according to the release. “During the investigation, this subject stated that he had been cut with a knife, however, sheriff’s detectives and deputies determined that he had apparently placed blood on the knife and later he admitted he lied about that.”

Hampton was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center where he is being held in lieu of a $10,000 cash bond. He is scheduled to appear in Laurel District Court Monday, according to the detention center’s website.

Laurel County Sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Kevin Berry, Lt. Greg Poynter, Detective Chris Edwards, Deputy Brandon Broughton and Deputy Josh Scott all took part in the investigation.
