Local teams wrapping up holiday tournaments
Corbin, Whitley County and Williamsburg are each in the midst of holiday tournaments as they prepare for the new year that includes a matchup between the ‘Hounds and Colonels on Tuesday, and the kickoff of the All ‘A’ Tournament for the Jackets.
After a week off, the Whitley County Colonels returned to action beginning Tuesday at the Magnolia Bank Holiday Classic at LaRue County.
The Colonels were scheduled to face Crittenden County in a game that had not yet been completed as of press time.
Coach Austin Horn said in the victories last week over Jackson City and Jackson County, his team has stepped up defensively.
“I would like to see us continue to improve on the defensive side,” Horn said. “Offensively, we have got to get back into the flow and run our half court set instead of just throwing up a shot.”
Whitley County is scheduled to play two more games in the tournament on Wednesday and Thursday against opponents that are to be determined.
Depending on which teams win or lose, the Colonels could find themselves facing LaRue County or Grayson County on Wednesday and then Apollo, Rockcastle County, Logan County or Estill County on Thursday.
The Colonels will be back at home Tuesday night to open their 50th District schedule against Corbin.
“We got to take the next games to work on little things,” Horn said when asked what the Colonels must do to be prepared for the Redhounds. “We have just goy to be playing together as one.”
Corbin won three games in Gatlinburg to run current winning streak to five games.
The Redhounds defeated Saltillo, Mississippi, Landrum, South Carolina, and Bullitt Central at the Smoky Mountain Christmas Classic to improve to 7-2 on the season.
Corbin defeated Saltillo, 49-44 on Dec. 20.
Carter Stewart led the way with 15 points. Hayden Llewellyn had 14 points and Brody Wells had 10.
The Redhounds pulled out a 66-65 win over Landrum on Tuesday.
Llewellyn had 23 points to lead the way. Wells added 18 points and Stewart had 12.
Corbin wrapped up the tournament on Wednesday with a 62-55 win over Bullitt Central.
Llewellyn had 23 points on the night while Wells poured in 19 points.
Corbin is playing in eastern Kentucky this week at the Mountain Schoolboy Classic at Belfry.
The Redhounds were slated to play Magoffin County Tuesday night in a game that had not yet been completed as of press time.
Corbin will be back in action Wednesday afternoon to face Shelby County. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Redhounds will wrap up the tournament at 4 p.m. on Thursday against Johnson Central.
Corbin will return to 50th District play next Tuesday when they travel to Whitley County.
The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets got back on the court Tuesday night against King’s Academy out of Seymour, Tennessee, in the Bill Perkins Holiday Classic at Williamsburg.
Williamsburg will have two more games in the tournament Wednesday and Thursday as they prepare to return to 13th Region play next week.
Other teams participating in the tournament include: Barbourville, Lee County, Leslie County, Louisville Collegiate and Trinity Christian Academy.
The Jackets will travel to Middlesboro next Tuesday and then travel to Harlan on Jan. 8 to face Barbourville in the opening round of the 13th Region All “A” Classic.
