Local teams travel over spring break
It was spring break for area students last week, and that meant road trips for the Whitley County, Corbin and Williamsburg baseball teams.
Coach Kyle Adams’ Whitley County Colonels traveled to Myrtle Beach to compete in the Ripken Experience. They went 1-3 on the week, picking up a 3-1 win against Hancock County to start things off, then losing their remaining three games 10-4, 14-4, and 5-0 to Landmark Christian, GA, Bethlehem, and Riverdale Baptist School, MD respectively.
“As coaches, we learned a lot about this team on the trip,” said Adams. “We learned who we can count on, and who we can’t. The players learned a lot about themselves as well. I think they learned that if they give the effort they can compete with anybody.”
“We competed against some of the best pitching we’ve ever seen while we were there,” Adams continued. “And we learned that when you make mistakes at that level of play everything is maximized. The things you can get away with elsewhere won’t cut it down there.”
Overall, Adams feels like the trip was a big positive for his team moving forward into district play. “They now know that they can compete with anyone as long as they are disciplined,” he said. “If we can just put together a complete game I think we’ll be pretty tough.”
As for Rob Ledington’s Corbin Redhounds, they traveled to Hilton Head, SC where they lost three games to a trio of South Carolina schools. First was a 4-1 defeat the hands of Battery Creek last Wednesday, followed by a 10-0 shutout by Wade Hampton on Thursday, and then Hilton Head Island came away with a 7-5 win on Friday. The Hounds were able to rebound on Monday by opening up district play at home with an 8-0 victory over the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets.
The Jackets were also on the road over spring break, dropping two games in Pigeon Forge. First was a 10-0 loss to Grainger County, and then a 14-2 loss against Gatlinburg-Pittman.
