Local Showdown
It may be for the first-time in tourn ament history, no one knows for sure, but the Whitley County Colonels and the Corbin Redhounds will battle for a spot in the Kentucky High School Baseball State Tournament Wednesday at Corbin’s House Field.
The Colonels and Redhounds made it to the finals after disposing of Cumberland and Bell County. The Colonels posted a 5-1 lead at the end of four innings and held off a Redskin rally in the top of the fifth to win 5-3.
Senior Jeremy Taylor led the way with two runs while Matt Strickland, Paul Johnson and Jonathan Bowman added solo runs to help get the Colonels to the 13th region finals.
Corbin got a two-hit performance from junior Lucas Henson to shutdown the Bell County Bobcats, 11-1 in six innings.
The Redhounds got a 14-hit attack led by Travis Prewitt who was two for two with a walk and Jake McDaniel who was three for three with a pair of RBI’s.
Corbin spotted the Bobcats a 1-0 lead then stormed back with two runs in the bottom of the third, three in the fourth and five in the fifth. They closed out the win with back to back doubles by Brandon Hedrick and Clint Cashen in the home half of the sixth.
Whitley County and Corbin will play for the 13th region championship Wednesday (tonight) at 6 p.m.
The winner will take on the 15th region champion in a best of three series next week at Corbin’s House Field.
