Local retired teachers association to contribute $2,500 to different organizations

Local retired teachers association met for the first time since the pandemic and decided to contribute $2,500 to different organizations.
“Because of COVID, schools were not in session for much of the year and no food was collected for the Feed KY Food Drive,” said the Whitley Area Retired Teachers Association (WARTA) in a press release. “Members continued to contribute generously, however, and it was decided for us to contribute $1,000 to the Family Resource Centers at Central Intermediate and East Elementary in Whitley County and Corbin Independent and Williamsburg Independent School Districts.”
The group decided to give another $1,000 gift to be shared between backpack programs at Corbin, which serves Whitley County, Corbin and Knox County Schools.
One additional $500 contribution was made to the Independence House, a drug rehabilitation center for women in Corbin.
WARTA members are continuing to collect school supplies to be shared with Family Resource Centers in the elementary schools in our area for the upcoming year, this time going to Pleasant View, Boston, North, and Oak Grove Elementary schools. Members may participate by purchasing and donating supplies or by sending a monetary contribution.
The groups next meeting will be at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 21 at the Whitley County Extension Office.
Retired teachers, who are not members, are invited to join or contact Ronnie Partin at (606) 304-2578 for more information about becoming a member.
