Local Girl Scout Troop installs Little Free Library for community

Little Free Library is a 501 nonprofit organization located in Hudson, WI. The idea of the Little Free Library started in 2009 when Todd Bol built a mini schoolhouse, filled it with books, and put it in his yard with a sign – “Free Books.” The little library was in honor of his mother, a schoolteacher and avid reader.

With that, a movement was born. Little Free Library swept the nation and the world. In nine short years, LFL estimates 60,000 little libraries all over the world and thousands of media stories have covered the phenomenon. Stewards (those who establish and manage a little library on their property or somewhere else in their community) find delight in getting to know their neighbors, spreading their passion for reading, and promoting literacy.

Corbin, KY’s Daisy Girl Scout Troop #2634 wanted to make an impact in their community with the money they had raised from their cookie sales. Last year they raised enough money for the Little Free Library but not enough for shipping. They decided to wait until this year’s sales to make up the difference that they needed. In the meantime, Troop Leader, Melinda Norvell, applied for the Little Free Library’s Impact Library Program and received it!

Little Free Library’s Impact Library Program places book-sharing boxes where they can be a catalyst for improving reading motivation and deepening community connectedness. The Girl Scout Troop will be the Stewards of Little Free Library Charter #61723. They will be responsible for setting up and maintaining the Little Free Library.

The Daisy Troop wants to cater mostly to children because of one fact that stood out to them; nearly 61% of the children in our region of the state do not have age appropriate books in their homes. This resonated with the girls and they wanted to try and change this statistic.

Daisy Troop #2634 is thrilled to be the recipients of the Impact Program and the Troop Members are so excited to see this dream come to fruition!
