Local food pantry seeking more donations
Members of Grace on the Hill Church in Corbin were doing what they do each Monday, handing out items from the church’s food pantry to those in need.
Grace on the Hill has become the one in need if it is to continue its efforts to provide food to the 85 families the pantry serves each week.
"We need help," said Everett Shakleton, director of the food pantry, noting the shelves that usually contain canned goods and other non-perishable food items are bare.
Because of the increasing number of people that the food pantry is serving, the food is going faster than in the past. In addition, the holidays have increased the number of families the church plans to help.
"We have 260 families for Thanksgiving," Shakleton said.
As a result, Shakleton said pantry officials are asking for the community’s help.
Whether it is one or two cans, or one or two cases of food, as long as it is non-perishable, it will help the food pantry continue.
"We will take anything," Shakleton said.
Items may be brought to the church office on Cumberland Falls Hwy, or to Betty’s Flowers on Master Street in Corbin. In addition, cash, checks or gift cards are welcome.
"We have stores that will work with us," Shakleton said.
Shakleton said local businesses have or are working to help the food pantry as well.
"The Social Security office had a food drive for us back in the fall and the cinema is doing a food drive now," Shakleton said.

It amazes me that the USA can send men to the moon and rovers to mars but we can’t feed and shelter the hungry and homeless. Shoe the children with no shoes on their feet, house the people living in the street, there is a solution (Steve Miller Band from the 70’s Fly Like An Eagle). We are heading for the fiscal cliff as the media reports and we are headed for hard times. Prepare now because when the economy drops out or a solar flare kills the computers we will see Anarchy in the streets.
