Local church cleans up Gordon Hill

Corbin Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Bishop Robert Barton instructs members of his congregation before a cleanup effort Saturday.
A local church capped off PRIDE’s Spring Cleanup month this past Saturday by cleaning up the Gordon Hill and Browning Acres area.
Robert Barton, Bishop at the Corbin Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said about 50 people spent upwards of four hours Saturday scouring clean Gordon Hill Pike and the Browning Acres area near the church for trash. The group also cleaned and trimmed grass in areas that don’t normally see much attention.
The effort is part of a four-year-old community service day effort by the church. It is always held the last Saturday in April.
"We are just trying to help unify this area," Barton said. "We want people to know we are out and about and that we want to help the community in any way we can."
In the past, the church has participated in cemetery clean-up efforts, remodeled some homes and taken on other small construction projects. Most of it wasn’t done locally. Barton said church members decided to change that this year.
"We wanted to be in town this time," he said. "We are looking to do an even better project next year."
The group picked up 40 bags and trash, and trimmed and mowed many areas from near downtown all the way to KY 312 bridge.
"They did an excellent job," said Corbin Mayor Willard McBurney about the effort. "They came to me asking what needed to be done. They were real receptive and they had a lot of ideas. They should be commended on what they accomplished."
