Lily man accused of attempted murder of Corbin Police officer

Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies and Corbin Police joined forces Sunday morning to arrest a Lily man wanted for the attempted murder of Corbin Police Lieutenant Glenn Taylor, but according to Sheriff John Root, the suspected refused to go peacefully.

Root stated that Deputies Shawn Jackson and Shannon Jones, along with Daniel Grigsby and his K-9 “Edge,” met with Corbin Police Officer Steve Meadors about 4:45 a.m. to serve the felony arrest warrant on 34-year-old Curtis Lewis at his residence on McClure Bridge Road off of East Ky. 1223.

Upon entering the residence, deputies reported finding Lewis hiding in a bedroom.

“The subject (Lewis) started kicking and swinging his arms and after a short scuffle with officers was taken into custody,” Root stated adding that Lewis continued to yell and scream at law enforcement as he was escorted to the cruiser.

Lewis was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and menacing.

In addition, Corbin Police had warrants out of Knox County charging Lewis with attempted murder of a police officer, theft by unlawful taking of the value of $10,000 or more, first-degree persistent felony offender, second-degree burglary, third-degree burglary, theft by unlawful taking – auto, first-degree fleeing or evading police and controlled substance prescription not in original container.

Corbin Police Major Rob Jones said Taylor had attempted to stop Lewis at the Speedway gas station on Falls Hwy. on December 8.

“Taylor had seen Curtis and knew he was wanted on a bunch of warrants,” Jones said.

Jones said Lewis attempted to flee from the scene, leading Taylor on a high-speed pursuit across the Corbin bypass.

“A tire on the truck blew out near the entrance to CTA,” Jones said adding that Lewis finally stopped near Buchanan Blvd.

When Taylor attempted to detain Lewis, Jones said Lewis tried to run over Taylor. Taylor was not injured, but Lewis was able to escape into the woods.

Jones said when Taylor ran the license plates on the truck, he learned it had been reported stolen.

Corbin Police began checking known addresses that Lewis had previously used, one of which was the McClure Bridge Road location.

Lewis is facing charges of first-degree fleeing or evading police – on foot, controlled substance prescription not in original container, two counts of second-degree burglary, two counts of third-degree burglary, theft by unlawful taking of the value of $500 or more but less than $10,000, theft by unlawful taking of an auto valued at $10,000 or more but less than $1 million, parole violation, resisting arrest, menacing and second-degree disorderly conduct.

In addition, Lewis was served with indictment warrants charging him with theft by unlawful taking of the value of $10,000 or more but less than $1 million, three counts of first-degree persistent felony offender, third-degree burglary and theft by unlawful taking of the value of $500 ore more but less than $10,000.

Jones said additional charges, including attempted murder of a police officer, are pending.

Lewis is being held in the Laurel County Detention Center on a $25,000 cash bond.
