Let Freedom Ring
“Let Freedom Ring”, a national bell ringing ceremony was conducted by the Capt Charles Gatilff Chapter of the Kentucky Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and the William Whitley Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution on Saturday, July 4, 2009. The event was held at 1:30 p.m. in Patriot Park on the campus of the University of the Cumberlands.
The program started with welcoming remarks from Dr. Michael B. Colegrove, President of the Capt Charles Gatilff Chapter SAR. This was followed by the group pledging allegiance to our nation’s flag. J.B. Mountjoy then led the group in the Pledge to the Sons of the American Revolution and Donna Colegrove led the group in singing America.
Patti Mullins, Regent of the William Whitley Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution led the group in the Preamble to the Constitution and The Americans Creed. This was followed by remarks from Dr. Colegrove related to the significance of the occasion. He shared with the group the Congressional Resolution establishing this event. This resolution was adopted on June 26, 1963.
Donna Colegrove led the group in singing God Bless America and at 2 p.m. the replica to the Liberty Bell, located in Patriot Park, was rung 13 times in honor of the 13 original colonies. The bell ringing was followed by a prayer led by Dr. John Mountjoy, Chaplin of the Capt. Charles Gatilff Chapter. The SAR Recessional led by J.B. Mountjoy concluded the program.
