Lefevers named new principal at Corbin Middle School

Corbin Independent Schools officials announced Monday that Corbin Middle School Assistant Principal Christi Lefevers has been selected to be the school’s new principal.

Superintendent Dave Cox said the school’s Site Based Decision-Making Council selected Lefevers from among three candidates.

“She was a really good candidate,” said Cox, who sat in with the council and had a vote in the selection process.

Cox said Lefevers’ experience as a high school English teacher and as assistant principal at the middle school were among the things took into consideration.

“She knows what middle schools need to succeed at the next level,” Cox said.

Lefevers’ first day in the new position was Monday.

“I’m still trying to wrap my mind around it,” Lefevers said of walking into the school Monday as the principal.

“The job is still basically the same as the assistant principal’s position. It is about servant leadership. Asking the staff, “What can I do for you?”

Lefevers is a Bell County native.

After obtaining her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Union College in Barbourville, she received her principalship at Eastern Kentucky University.

Lefevers’ began her teaching career at Bell County in 1998, moving on to Corbin High School in 2013.

In 2016, she was named assistant principal at Corbin Middle School.

Lefevers said after teaching freshman English and working at the middle school, she found her personality best fit with students in that age range.

“They are going through so much,” Lefevers said of the middle school students. “My goal is for a child to be successful, not only academically, but in whatever career path they choose.”

The principal position became available when Cynthia Davis took a new position as assistant superintendent.

“You could see this as a lot of pressure, but I am blessed to be surrounded by staff that gives 110 percent in whatever capacity,” Lefevers said of being named principal. “That allows me to come around and ask, “What do you need?”

As to what lies ahead in her educational career path, Lefevers said she is taking a wait-and-see approach.

“Education is a journey. I don’t know what the journey has in store for me,” Lefevers said. “This may be the pinnacle. This may not.”

The school system will hold a reception and meet and greet for Lefevers beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday at The Corbin Center.

At 5 p.m. a short program will be held to formally introduce Lefevers as the new principal.

Cox said both events are free and open to the public.
