UPDATE: Motorcyclist who fled scene of Thursday accident charged with DUI

Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies cited a Laurel County man to court Thursday afternoon after he allegedly ran off from the scene of a wreck involving a motorcycle and an SUV.

West Knox firefighters responded to the wreck on Cumberland Gap Parkway near Lowe’s Home Improvement about 4:30 p.m.

According to Sheriff John Root, the motorcyclist, identified as 38-year-old Roger Wilson of East Bernstadt, ran into the side of a GMC Denali before fleeing toward Lowe’s while still wearing his helmet. A female passenger on the motorcycle, identified as 44-year-old Shawna Moore of Corbin, was left injured on the ground reportedly suffering from internal injuries

Deputies searching the bike for clues to identify the driver found methamphetamine in one of the saddlebags.

Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, the department’s public affairs officer, said when Deputy Rick Cloyd apprehended Wilson, Wilson was carrying a set of brass knuckles, a stun gun and a hand ax.

Wilson was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, operating on a suspended/revoked operator’s license, no registration plates, possession of methamphetamine and carrying a deadly weapon.

Acciardo said Wilson was cited to Laurel District Court because he was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries.

Firefighters established a helicopter landing zone at the SEKRI building to airlift Moore.

The driver of the SUV was not injured.

Cloyd is continuing the investigation.
