Laurel County man accused of shooting at, fighting with deputies

A Laurel County man has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer after he allegedly shot at deputies Thursday night.

According to Sheriff John Root, 45-year-old Terry Collier allegedly fired two shots at deputies Rick Cloyd and Brandon Broughton.

Cloyd and Broughton had been called to a residence on Slate Ridge Road in Lily about 10:30 p.m. in response to a 911 call that a male subject was threatening to kill himself and anyone who tried to stop him, including law enforcement.

“The subject had sent an electronic message to another subject stating that ‘he was going out in a blaze of glory,’” Root stated.

Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, the department’s public affairs officer, said a family member called 911.

Root said that when deputies arrived and spoke with the suspect, later identified as Collier, he told them he would kill them and then ran from the residence while firing two rounds at the deputies.

After a short foot pursuit, Root said Collier dropped the gun but continued to fight with deputies.

Deputies finally took Collier into custody and lodged him in the Laurel County Detention Center.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, Collier was charged with first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, first-degree fleeing or evading police – on foot and resisting arrest.

Root, Detective Jason Back and Sergeant Larry Parrott assisted with the investigation.

Bailiff Brad Mink also assisted at the scene.
