Larry Wilson’s lawyer wants off the case

A Williamsburg tow truck operator, who shot a man to death in the parking lot of the Root Beer Stand in Corbin on July 31, is apparently looking for a new lawyer.

Jane Butcher, an attorney for Larry Neal Wilson, filed a motion in Whitley Circuit Court to withdraw as Wilson’s attorney of record.

The motion lists no reason for the withdrawal motion. Judge Dan Ballou could rule on the motion during a hearing set for Oct. 5.

Wilson, 55, is still being held in the Whitley County Detention Center on a $500,000 cash bond.

According to court records, a bond hearing has not been scheduled since Wilson was indicted on Sept. 14 for murder and first-degree wanton endangerment. He has pled not guilty to the charges.

Wilson is accused of firing a 9mm pistol through the rolled-down window of his tow truck and killing 38-year-old Tod Carter after some sort of confrontation between the two men in the Root Beer Stand parking lot the evening of July 31.

The bullet went through Carter and struck a pick-up truck occupied by John Poynter, Deborah Poynter and Dalton Poynter.
The bullet striking the truck is what led to the wanton endangerment charge.

So far police haven’t recovered the bullet.

Wilson faces between 20 and 50 years in prison or a life sentence if convicted of murder. The wanton endangerment charge carries a penalty up to five years in prison.
