Larry Lee Harp
Larry Lee Harp of Pleasant View passed away at his home on Saturday, November 5, 2022 surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lola Dean (Shelley) Harp and Oran McKinley Harp, as well as, his brother, Charlie Bob Harp.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Debbie Mills Harp; daughter, Rachel Elizabeth Harp Smiddy (Ned); son, Jacob Lee Harp; sister, Karen Sue Powell (Willie) of Pleasant View; brother-in-law’s, Jimmy Mills (Pam) of South Carolina and Roger Dale Mills of Williamsburg; and sister-in-law, Karen Lynn Harp of Pleasant View. He was a devoted guardian of Johnna and Matthew Cooter, loving them as his own children. His beloved granddaughter, Adriana Dean Smiddy was his greatest pride and joy. A host of nieces and nephews grieve the loss of an uncle, who always had time to pull a prank on them or talk with them about sports or hunting. His entire family will miss his ability to make them laugh and to spin tales!
Larry grew up in the Saxton community of Whitley County playing sports at an early age. He developed a passion for softball and continued to play, coach, and umpire for over 35 years. He was known as “Showboat” for his colorful attire and hitting multiple home runs in most games.
He loved living in the mountains and was an avid outdoorsman, hunting and fishing, until his illness. He enjoyed raising and showing his beagles and hounds for several years.
He became a Christian in June 1978 while attending Saxton Missionary Baptist Church and was baptized by Rev. John Copeland in Cool Camp/Clearfork River. He was a member of 1st Baptist Church in Williamsburg. He loved listening to southern gospel music several times a week as his way of worshipping our Lord and Savior.
Larry retired from Kentucky Transportation Dept, District 11, Whitley County Maintenance in 2006 with over 30 years of service. He was active as a member of the Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years. Upon retirement, he enjoyed spending time at Joe Moses Grocery and Jones Pit Stop with his friends or in his workshop repairing lawnmowers.
Larry was deeply loved and will be missed by all his family and friends.
Visitation will be after 5:00 PM on Monday, November 7, at the Croley Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, November 8, at the Croley Funeral Home with Dr. Bob Dunston and Rev. Larry Carte officiating.
He will be laid to rest in the Jellico Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers are Jones Pit Stop Crew. Honorary pallbearers will be Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department.
