The Corbin Lady Redhounds won their fourth game in a row Monday night downing the South Laurel Lady Cardinals, 50-35 at Gilliam Gym.
It was the second win over the Lady Cardinals, giving the Lady Redhounds a 3-0 record in the district standings heading to Whitley County Friday night.
“We came out ready to play,” Corbin Coach Jennifer Parsons said. “Big props to Karlie Blackburn, who came out ready to play. She set the tempo and I was really pleased with her play tonight.”
Parsons also credited junior center Holli Disney for her play on both ends of the court. “Holli’s defense really makes a big difference,” Parsons said. “Holli’s presence is getting better. When she stands up she is like 6’9” and they will have a hard time shooting over her.”
It was pretty much Blackburn and Disney taking control of the game in the first quarter. Blackburn scored all nine of her points in the first quarter while Disney added five as Corbin ran out to an 18-4 lead.
The Lady Redhounds scored nine of the first 11 points before South Laurel Coach Konnie Snyder called a time-out. Things didn’t get much better for South Laurel as Corbin finished the period with a 7-2 run.
It was sophomore Sarah Ashley having the big second quarter. She scored eight of Corbin’s 10 points and gave the Lady Redhounds a 28-8 lead with 2:06 left in the quarter. Corbin led at the half, 28-13.
South Laurel made a run at the Lady Redhounds in the third quarter and cut the lead to nine (32-23) on a basket by Macy Clontz with 2:24 in the period. After trading baskets Kayla Wilson hit a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining to put the Lady Redhounds ahead 36-25 at the end of the quarter.
Corbin (10-5) pulled away in the fourth quarter by going on an 11-6 run and taking a 47-31 lead on a Mallory Wood basket with 3:13 left in the game.
Kayla Wilson led all scorers in the game with 13 points while Ashley added 11 points. Cassandra Johnson, a junior forward, led South Laurel with 11 points.
