Coach Andrea Ellis looks on as her team falls to Corbin in the first-round of the district Tournament.
It was all Corbin in the girls’ 50th District opener at Williamsburg Monday night as the Lady Redhounds ran beating the host Lady Jackets, 70-45.
Corbin (23-8) hit five three-pointers in the games out to a 27-9 lead in the first eight minutes and never looked back in
first six minutes and its defense never allowed Williamsburg to get the momentum.
“I thought we came out ready to play from the start of the game and continued with intensity throughout the game,” Corbin Coach Jennifer Parsons said. “We have struggled on the offensive end for a couple of weeks so I was more than pleased with the effort on our offensive execution.”
Junior Kayla Wilson hit the game’s first three-pointer to get Corbin off to the quick start, but junior guard Kacie Brown, one of the smallest players on the floor took the ball inside for a lay-up.
That was the closest Williamsburg would get as Corbin went on a 10-0 run and took a 13-2 lead with 4:33 in the quarter,
A basket by senior Carissa Conlin, who led all scorers with 28 points, and a three-pointer by Brown saw Williamsburg (4-17) pull within six (13-7).
Corbin went on an 11-0 run to close out the first quarter and take a 27-9 lead. Melanie Wilson hit a three-pointer in the run while freshman Jaclyn Jewell hit three free throws from the line after being fouled on a long shot with four seconds remaining in the quarter.
The Lady Redhounds extended the lead to 38-16 in the second quarter on a three-pointer by Miranda Wilson. Corbin went to the half with a 39-18 lead.
Things didn’t get any better for the Lady Jackets in the third period as Corbin outscored Williamsburg, 16-8. The Lady Redhounds pushed the lead out to 31 points on a free throw by Kristen Fothergill with just over three minutes left in the quarter.
Conlin went out with a blaze of glory in the fourth quarter, scoring 15 of her 28 points.
Miranda Wilson led Corbin with 16 points while Kayla Wilson added 10 points to the winning effort.
Corbin will move on to the 50th District championship game Friday night where they will meet the winner of the Whitely County-South Laurel game at 7:30 p.m.
“Throughout the week we will continue to work on our offensive execution in practice and to ensure we are ready to rebound on the offensive end,” Parsons said. “No matter who we play on Friday both will be a key for us.”
