Lady Hounds survive scare from Jackson Co. in round one of region tournament
The Jackson County Lady Generals did not make it easy, but the Corbin Lady Hounds were able to do what they needed to do to secure a 56-49 victory Tuesday evening at the Corbin Arena.
With the win, the Lady Hounds (21-8) will advance to the semifinals of the 2024 13th Region championship tournament, where they will play Knox Central (23-9) this Friday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday’s game against the Lady Generals was close throughout. After one quarter, Corbin held onto a one-point lead, 11-10. Jackson County would turn things around in the second quarter, however, building up a double-digit lead and eventually going into halftime with a 31-23 advantage.
The Hounds regrouped at the half, and managed to retake the lead late in the third quarter. The game was tied at 47-47 late in the fourth, but Corbin was able to take advantage of a couple of costly miscues by the Lady Generals and score baskets when it mattered the most in order to come away with the 56-49 win.
As for Friday’s semifinal round contest, this will be the second time that the Lady Hounds have faced off against Knox Central this year. They hosted the Lady Panthers back on Feb. 5, and came out on top of a very competitive contest, 65-61.
Knox defeated Harlan in their first-round game of the region tournament Tuesday, 60-39.
