Lady Hounds, Lady Colonels win championships Wednesday night – 10/21/15
Wednesday night was a night for celebration, as the Whitley County Lady Colonels volleyball team became champions of the 51st District, and the Corbin Lady Redhounds soccer team punched their ticket to the 2015 KHSAA state championship tournament after defeating South Laurel to win a 13th Region title.
Lady Colonels win district
The Whitley County volleyball team, coached by David Halcomb, defeated Lynn Camp 3-0 on Tuesday evening to advance to Wednesday’s 51st District championship game, played at Lynn Camp High School. In that championship contest they would square off with the Knox Central Lady Panthers, who defeated Barbourville 3-0 Tuesday to earn their spot in the district finals.
In the end, the Lady Panthers were no match for the Lady Colonels, who won 3-0 (25-10, 25-23, 25-8). With the win, Whitley improves to 17-20 on the year, while Knox Central falls to 9-17. Both teams will now advance to this year’s 13th Region tournament, which will be held at South Laurel High School next week.

Lady Hounds are state bound
Also Wednesday, the 50th District champion Corbin Lady Redhounds defeated the South Laurel Lady Cardinals 2-1 to become 13th Region champions and advance to the 2015 KHSAA state championship tournament.
Corbin junior Kara Grisell headed in a Nikki Wells free kick for the game’s first goal with 5:20 remaining in the first half. South was able to tie the score at 1-1 shortly thereafter, however, thanks to a Haley House penalty kick that found its way into the back of the net.
The Lady Hounds had a couple of great looks at goals in the second half, but it was a Wells penalty kick at the 17:00 mark that put the district champs up 2-1, and eventually gave them their region title victory.
“It’s really exciting to come out and win the district, and then come out and win the region,” said Corbin Head Coach Hannah Goins after the win. “This team has really stepped up, and it’s exciting that they’ve been able to do something that no other team has done before them.”
“This feeling is overwhelming,” said Lady Hound senior Cheyenne Rose. “When we started out we didn’t know where the season would go, but we came out and really showed who we are. Now we’re going to state, and I’m just so proud of my team and my coaches.”
“It’s so amazing to think about how far we’ve come since the beginning of the season,” added fellow senior Briana Massengill. “It’s an amazing feeling for both me and Cheyenne to lead this team and actually be the ones to help us make history.”
Next up for the Corbin girls soccer team, who improved to 11-6-3 after Wednesday’s win, will be a trip to face the winners of Region 14, Estill County, on Tuesday, October 27. The Lady Engineers defeated Letcher County Central Wednesday night to capture their region crown and improve to 18-1-2 on the year.
