Lady Colonels
Whitley County completed the Boyle County Invitational last week with a 2-2 record. Coach Larry Anderson didn’t feel his team played its best basketball. “We just didn’t play well in this tournament,” he said. “We have played 11 straight games on the road and we might be getting a little tired.”
“Plus, there was some good competition in the tournament,” Anderson said. “For the most part I was pleased with the way we played and the girls did a good job.”
“You can expect to have some down time,” he added. “I wouldn’t want to be playing our best right now.”
The Lady Colonels (10-4) opened the tournament with a 59-54 loss to 10th region favorite, Mason County.
The Lady Colonels led 18-12 at the end of the first quarter and stretched the lead to ten before Mason County outscored the Lady Colonels 10-2 in the final minutes and tied the game at the half, 28-28.
Mason County took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Colonels 16-9. Whitley County challenged the Lady Royals in the fourth quarter but came up short.
Randall Holbrook led the Lady Colonels with 21 points.
McCullah scored a game-high 22 points in the second game as Whitley County rolled past the Lady Lions of Garrard County, 60-49.
Heading for a seventh place finish, the Lady Colonels played probably their worst game of the tournament in a 42-36 loss to Washington County. The Commanders took a 14-6 lead in the opening quarter and Whitley County was unable to make the comeback. Holbrook led the Lady Colonels with 15 points.
Whitley County did score the first seven points of the third quarter and tied the game at 21-21, but five unanswered points by Washington County saw the Springfield team take the lead for good.
In the final game of the tournament, Whitley County outscored Prestonsburg 21-5 in the first quarter and took the easy 74-36 win. All 12 players scored in the win with Holly Jones leading the Lady Colonels with 14 points. Three other Lady Colonels, Holbrook (13), McCullah (10) and Brimm (10) finished in double figures.
The Lady Colonels will be on the road again this week when they travel to Corbin Friday night. “We have three district games in a row,” said Anderson. “We need to be ready for these games.”
