KSP Trooper suffers broken hand while arrested burglary suspect
Corbin resident Wayne C. Marcus allegedly had a very busy morning Thursday.
According to Kentucky State Police, he allegedly broke into the Canadatown Market off Ky. 204, cut his hand, ran from troopers, assaulted a trooper, who suffered a broken hand, and then took a trip to the hospital where he and a trooper were both treated before his journey ended with a trip to jail.
About 2:04 a.m., KSP Trooper Tony Dingess charged Marcus, 32, of 2446 Eaton Town Road, with first-degree fleeing or evading police, third-degree assault, third-degree burglary, first-degree wanton endangerment, theft, resisting arrest, marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Dingess and Trooper Les Moses responded to the market after dispatchers received a report about 1:12 a.m. of an activated burglar alarm at the business.
When officers arrived they discovered a busted front door with glass broken out and troopers soon received an anonymous tip about a subject wearing an orange sweatshirt, who was observed running from the market across the street to a trailer, according to Marcus’ arrest citation.
Dingess and Moses went to the trailer where Moses observed Marcus through an uncovered window and Dingess spotted blood on the front porch.
"The accused was sweating profusely and covered in blood," Dingess wrote.
Marcus was apparently staying at the trailer, said KSP Trooper Don Trosper, a public affairs officer at the London post.
Marcus answered the door and was bleeding from his hands, which he told troopers he had just cut with a knife prior to their arrival, according to the citation.
Marcus let police come inside where Dingess observed a black mask with coin money that was also covered in blood inside the living room. Police believe that the money they recovered was taken from the store, Trosper said.
"Soon after the accused fled the residence on foot by running out the front door and slamming the door on troopers," Dingess wrote. "The accused led troopers on a foot chase, which created a substantial risk of serious physical injury."
When Dingess had almost caught up with Marcus, he allegedly jumped in a vegetated area and refused to come out or show his hands, Dingess wrote.
Dingess deployed his Tazer, which promoted Marcus to grab it out of his hand. After a physical altercation, troopers took Marcus into custody and transported him to Baptist Regional Medical Center.
Dingess was treated for a broken right hand. Marcus was treated for the cut to his hand that he apparently suffered during the burglary, and for a cut to his head that happened during the scuffle, Trosper said.
Marcus was taken to the Whitley County Detention Center where he is being held in lieu of a $25,000 cash bond.
Marcus pleaded not guilty to all charges during his arraignment Thursday afternoon before District Judge Fred White.
White appointed the public advocate’s office to represent Marcus and scheduled an Oct. 1 preliminary hearing in his case.
KSP Sgt. Bill Elliotte also assisted with the investigation.
