KSP taking part in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Oct. 22

Kentucky State Police Post 11, working in conjunction with the Laurel County Health Department, will be participating in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on October 22.

According to Trooper Lloyd Cochran, public affairs officer at Post 11 in London, a collection point will be established at the health department office at 525 Whitley Street in London.

“All citizens that wish to participate may dispose of their current or outdated unwanted medication either in its original container or by removing the medication from its container and disposing of it directly into the disposal box,” Cochran said, adding any identifying information should be removed from the prescription label prior to disposing of medication in the containers.

Pills and liquid medications will be accepted. However, Cochran said intravenous solutions, injectibles and/or syringes will be accepted due to the potential hazard posed by bloodborne pathogens.

“Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are not part of this initiative and should not be placed in collection containers.

Cochran said state police will seal the disposal boxes and they will be turned over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Area residents who can’t make it to Saturday’s event, may dispose of their medications at designated drop boxes located at area police stations including Corbin, London, or Williamsburg.
