Update: Corbin woman arrested in hit and run case

A Corbin woman, who was wanted in connection with a hit and run accident early Thursday evening, has been apprehended.

Kentucky State Police arrested Michelle Huddleston Helton on Saturday for leaving the scene of an accident in Corbin Thursday evening.

About 7:30 p.m. Friday, KSP officers out of the Post 10 in Harlan announced that an arrest warrant had been issued for Michelle Huddleston Helton, 41, for allegedly operating the vehicle that struck Shawna Moore about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, the release stated.

Moore, 46, of Corbin, was walking north on Ky. 1232 in the Knox County portion of Corbin when a Toyota Rav 4 traveling on the roadway struck her with the passenger side mirror causing her to fall into a ditch, according to the release.

An ambulance transported Moore to Baptist Health Corbin where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The operator of the vehicle failed to stop after the collision.

About 11:30 a.m. Saturday, KSP Trooper Sammy Faris located Helton at a North Earls Avenue residence in Corbin and charged her with leaving the scene of an accident/failure to render aid in a crash with serious injury, according to a KSP press release.

KSP Post 10 Public Affairs Officer Shane Jacobs said that Helton admitted being the driver of the vehicle during an interview with police.

Helton pleaded not guilty to the charges during her arraignment Monday morning in Knox County District Court.

Judge Skip Hammons scheduled a June 19 preliminary hearing in her case, and set a $5,000 cash bond.

Helton was lodged in the Knox County Detention Center, but has since been released on bond, according to the jail’s website.

Faris is continuing the investigation.
