KSP ends high-speed chase with spike strips
A high-speed chase that started in southern Laurel County late Monday night ended after Kentucky State Police disabled the car with spike strips.
Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Hamblin arrested 19-year-old Johnathon Day, of East Bernstadt, and 20-year-old passenger Michelle Sawyers in the wake of the chase. Police found marijuana packaged for resale, drug paraphernalia, a weapon and a large amount of cash in the car.
Hamblin attempted to stop Day for speeding and reckless driving on US 25 just north of Corbin in the Lily community of Laurel County. Day turned and fled down a back road and emerged on the Cumberland Gap Parkway in north Corbin and raced toward Keavy. Police pursued him onto KY 363 going toward London.
State Police were able to deploy the spike strips near the Pine Grove community, flattening all of the tires on Days vehicle. He attempted to continue to elude police, ramming into both a KSP vehicle and a Sheriff’s Department cruiser. There was damage to both cars.
The chase ended on KY 1006 and both Day and Sawyers were quickly taken into custody.
Day faces charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, trafficking in marijuana, wanton endangerment, criminal mischief and resisting arrest as well as numerous traffic violations.
Sawyers was charged with public intoxication, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, trafficking in marijuana, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Both are being held in the Laurel County Detention Center on $25,000 cash bonds.
