Kroger robbery suspect surrenders to police
The main suspect in a robbery at the east Corbin Kroger surrendered himself to police Tuesday morning after nearly three weeks on the run.
Henry Paul Sizemore, 33, of Corbin, turned himself in to investigators at the Corbin Police Department Tuesday morning after police had negotiated his surrender with London attorney James Hodge. Hodge is representing Sizemore.
“He has two very small children, an infant son and a two-year-old son,” Corbin Police Capt. Tim Helton said. He is the lead investigator in the case. “The police came to where they had been staying and he didn’t want the police coming to where his children were.”
At about 5:40 p.m. Sept. 21, a loss prevention officer with Kroger confronted a man who had apparently tried to steal about $25 worth of hair care items. Police later identified the man as Sizemore after releasing surveillance video footage to the media.
Sizemore allegedly shoved the officer, then pulled a knife and slashed at the man a few times. He fled from the store and knocked aside another employee before ramming into a 54-year-old female customer in the entryway. She suffered an arm injury and broken toes.
Sizemore leaped into a mid-80s model Plymouth Reliant K driven by Frank Brian Simpson, 33, of Corbin, and sped away. Simpson gave himself up to police the next Monday.
Helton said Sizemore, who is described as weighing nearly 400 lbs., told authorities he had been actively eluding police since an arrest warrant was issued for him last month.
“His remarks were he’s been in the Corbin area staying here and there … wherever he could stay.”
His girlfriend brought him to the police station Tuesday where he was formally charged with first-degree robbery, misdemeanor theft and fourth-degree assault.
Helton said Sizemore had “some history in the past” and “some other things pending” that led to the robbery, but would not go into details.
Sizemore was taken to the Knox County holding facility. Helton said he would likely appear in court to be arraigned in the next two days.
