Knox deputies find drugs, cash after high-speed chase through Gray

A Knox County duo was arrested Sunday morning following a high-speed chase through Gray that ended when the car ran off the road and became lodged between two trees.

Knox County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Rex A. Gray, 29, of Woolum and David Dewayne Davis, 53, of Barbourville in connection with the chase and the methamphetamine, prescription pills and more than $25,000 cash that deputies retrieved from the vehicle.

Deputy William Stewart, the department’s public affairs officer, said Deputy Andrew Lawson was patrolling on Candle Ridge Road, west of Ky. 233 about 12:30 a.m. when he saw the 2012 Camaro being driven at a high rate of speed and in a reckless manner.

Lawson initiated pursuit south onto Ky. 3437 and then onto Ky. 3436 when the driver lost control and wrecked the car.

“The driver and passenger had to exit the vehicle through the passenger side window,” Stewart stated.

Stewart said Deputy Lawson located a plastic bag containing an unspecified amount of suspected methamphetamine, along with more than 90 Gabapentin capsuled, approximately 2 ounces of marijuana and a syringe, along with the cash.

Gray, who was driving, was charged with reckless driving, first-degree fleeing or evading police, operating a motor vehicle on a suspended/revoked operator’s license, first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance and trafficking in marijuana.

In addition Gray was served with warrants from the Kentucky Parole Board charging him with parole violation and a Laurel County bench warrant charging him with contempt of court.

Davis was charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, trafficking in marijuana and public intoxication – controlled substance.

Gray and Davis were each lodged in the Knox County Detention Center.
