KARNS EDGES CORBIN
Corbin Coach Steve Jewell was disappointed with his team’s loss to Karns High School Friday, 22-21 at Gilliam Field.
“We were on their side of the 50, five times and walked away with no points in the first half and you can’t do that,” Jewell said. “You have to capitalize and that’s one of the things we have been drilling our kids about.”
“We had chances,” Jewell said. “Two of those five times we were down inside the 30. You have to walk away from there with points. You can’t let a team on the road creep around and hang around or it will come back to bite you…and it really did. We let them hang around until they got us.”
Jewell feels the Redhounds (0-2) should have been up 21 points at the half. Instead thanks to a Brady Foley 58-yard kickoff return, the Redhounds put together a 10-play, 37-yard drive that led to a 7-0 lead.
Senior quarterback Ty Cobb capped off the drive with a 15-yard pass to junior Hunter Grubb for the six points with 5:49 in the opening quarter.
As Jewell mentioned the Redhounds had several opportunities to score, but failed to get in the scoreboard when Cobb was sacked on a fourth down play. A 28-yard field goal attempt by Cai Jackson was wide to the right as the Redhounds failed to score after a Brady Foley interception.
Karns tied the game early in the third quarter when Shawnty Matthews picked up a fumbled ball and ran 57 yards for the score.
The fireworks really began in the fourth quarter when the team’s combined to put 29 points on the scoreboard.
Karns took the lead when quarterback Matt Naumen hit Shaquille Cantrell on a 39-yard TD pass to put the Beavers ahead 14-7.
However, the Redhounds bounced back with a 14-play drive that covered 78 yards. The final play saw Cobb hit Grubb on a 19-yard completion with 4:22 left in the game. Jackson added the PAT, tying the score at 14-14.
The Redhounds’ defense appeared to have the game in hand when Matt Jewell picked up a fumble on the ensuing play and went into the end zone from five yards out to put Corbin ahead, 20-14. Jackson’s kick made it 21-14.
However, the game wasn’t over yet and the Beavers went 56 yards on six plays to pull within a point of the Redhounds. The big play in the drive saw the Beavers convert a fourth-and-20 at the 18-yard line.
Naumen finished off the drive with a toss to Harris with 2:45 left in the contest. Karns went for the win on the conversion and was successful when Naumen hit Brant Nickens for the good points.
“We had some kids cruising when we needed to push on every play like it was their last play,” Jewell said.
Foley led the offense with 24 rushes for 119 yards while Jake Coppock had six carries for 20 yards and Matt Jewell added 18 yards on eight attempts. Cobb hit on 16 of 28 passes for 143 yards. Naumen connected on 11 of 25 passes for 204 yards.
Josh Jewell had seven catches for 53 yards while Grubb had five catches for 52 yards.
“Defensively I thought we stopped the run better, but we didn’t stop the pass,” Jewell said. “So, we’ll give it a 50-50 score and the last time I checked 50 was still failing. So, we still have to improve on that end whether it is playing better pass coverage or getting to a guy with our blitz packages.”
The Redhounds will remain at home this week as they host the Tates Creek Commodores. Tates Creek comes in with a 1-1 record after beating East Jessamine 14-7 during the first week of play. Last week they lost to a good Ryle team, 43-8.
“They are a big ball club, another 6A team,” Jewell said. “They have some speed and they will be hungry for a win. They took it on the chin from Ryle, but they are a very good football team.”
“This is the first meeting in a long time,” Jewell said. “It will be one of those unknown ballgames but I think both teams will be ready to play. I will be very disappointed if our kids are not. They have some questions about themselves right now and they have some questions about their teammates.”
“Right now we have to find ourselves and the only way you can do that is to play yourself out of that,” Jewell said. “Wins have a tendency to cure a lot of aliments, so we need to get on the win column.”
Jewell looks for Tates Creek to run the ball more than pass. “They don’t do anything fancy. They are a rumble run orientated although they have slipped to the pass some, but I feel that was because they were behind against Ryle.”
“When they best East Jessamine, they were more of a run-oriented team,” Jewell said. “I think we are going to have to stop the run.”
