One of the things I love about working for a newspaper is I never know where my job will take me.

Last night, Thursday, was a perfect example of having the chance to attend two polar opposite, yet equally interesting events almost simultaneously.

I’d been looking forward all week to the game between the University of the Cumberlands varsity men’s basketball team, and highly ranked Mountain States. The Cougars came into the game with a perfect record, and the Patriots were unbeaten as well. I knew it would be a hard-fought battle. The game was particularly cool because the University used it as a chance to hold a food drive for the needy. You could either donate a single dollar to get in, or bring two canned goods and drop them off at the front gate for a ticket. With a can of green beans and pork and beans in tow, I was off to the game.

I realized just as I was about to depart that the college’s chorale was also holding their fall concert at almost the same time as the game. I love the chorale and have seen them perform several times. Under the direction of Dr. David Etter, they never disappoint. You could not get two events as far apart in tone than these. A wild, raucous, physical basketball game and a high-brow, pitch-perfect vocal performance. Talk about variety being the spice of life!
