JELLICO WINS BOWMAN
The Jellico Blue Devils downed the Lynn Camp Wildcats Saturday night to win their first Bowman Memorial Classic. Jellico jumped out to a 25-11 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in defeating the Wildcats, 74-51.
Lynn Camp kept it close in the early going and trailed 10-7 when Shawn Couch hit a short jumper, but a 15-4 run in the last four minutes saw the Blue Devils stretch the lead to 14 points at the end of the first quarter.
Things didn’t get any better in the second period as the Blue Devils outscored Lynn Camp, 18-8 and took a 43-19 lead into the dressing room.
Senior Ethan Shelley led the Blue Devils with 19 points while MVP Cody Malicoat and Justin Bowlin added 12 points.
Jellico won all three games in the tournament. They beat Harlan 64-49 and Owsley County, 71-44. Harlan took second while Lynn Camp claimed third place.
‘Cats pick up win
The Lynn Camp Wildcats opened play in their own Bowman Memorial Classic Thursday night with a win over the Owsley County Owls, 57-44.
The Wildcats, who lost to the Owls 66-38 back on Dec. 3, had to come from behind to get their first win of the season. The Owls (2-5) led 26-19 at the half, but the Wildcats came storming back in the third quarter to outscore Owsley County, 22-5. Lynn Camp never looked back after taking a 33-31 lead on a steal and lay-up by Ryan Sevier.
The Wildcats (1-6) trailed 31-27 when they went on a 17-0 run to put the game away.
The Owls jumped out to a 17-10 lead in the first quarter and expanded that to 23-10 before the Wildcats scored on a Skylar McFarland 3-poiner with 5:33 left in the first half.
Trailing 25-15, the Wildcats got a spark with back-to-back baskets by Erik Jones and Chade Turner to cut the lead to six (25-19). Brandon Mason hit one-of-two from the line to send Owsley County to the dressing room with a 26-19 lead at the half.
The Wildcats scored the first eight points of the third quarter on baskets by Sevier, Couch, McFarland and Turner to take a 27-26 lead before Mason hit a 3-pointer to put the Owls back on top.. Owsley County missed their first eight shots of the quarter and allowed Lynn Camp to get back in the game.
Chase Turner led all scorers in the game with 19 points while Shawn Couch tossed in 16 points. Chad Hall led the Owls with 17 points.
The Wildcats had a decisive advantage at the free throw line where they hit 16-of-23 while the Owls connected on two-of-seven.
The Jellico Blue Devils led by Cody Malicoat defeated the Harlan Green Dragons in the second game, 64-49.
