JACKETS WIN
The district champion Williamsburg Yellow Jackets came one step closer to their next goal of playing for a regional title when they shutout the visiting Jenkins Cavaliers Friday night.
The home crowd was electric as the Jackets (8-3) honored their four senior players prior to kickoff. Coty Croley, Toby Nguyen, Devan Robinson, and Jason Sisk would go on to lead their team to a very convincing 40-0 victory over the Cavs (1-10).
“I was very pleased with the kids this week,” said coach Jerry Herron after the game. “They showed great work ethic in preparing for this game, and their play tonight was phenomenal.”
Two of the more memorable plays of the evening came courtesy of the dynamic duo of quarterback Dalton Sizemore, and wide receiver Skyler Griffith. With 4:20 remaining in the opening quarter, Sizemore threw up a pass to Griffith from the Williamsburg 44-yard line. Griffith made the reception, and took it in for a 56-yard touchdown. They hooked up again on the first play of the next Williamsburg possession, this time going 83 yards to pay dirt.
Coach Herron commented that he has been very pleased with the production that he has gotten out of his skill position players, but he attributes their success, in large part, to the offensive line. “It all starts up front,” he said. “We are able to make plays like that when the line provides us with good pass protection.”
Herron also pointed out that his defense played a big role in the victory over Jenkins. The first Yellow Jacket touchdown of the night came after freshman Chase Lowrie intercepted a pass and returned it all the way down to the Jenkins 5-yard line. Jefferson Patrick punched it in on the first play from scrimmage, and then he added on the two-point conversion, giving Williamsburg the early 8-0 lead.
Other Yellow Jackets who would find their way into the end zone included Corey Shelton, Logan Hamlin, Devan Robinson, and Micah Purdie, who all had successful two-point conversions. Shelton also caught a pass for a touchdown.
The Yellow Jackets are now looking forward to a rematch of the week two meeting between them and the Harlan Green Dragons. When these two teams met previously, it was Harlan who got the upper hand, defeating the visiting Jackets, 41-22.
“Not many times in life do you get a chance at redemption,” said coach Herron. “But we have it coming up this week.”
“Harlan is a really good team. They’ll be coming down here confident. We are going to find out where we’ve improved since week two, and where we haven’t.”
Kickoff for the round two game and the Jackets is set for 7:30.
