The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets are on a roll in district play. Williamsburg has scored more than 50 points in its last two games, a 54-6 rout of Berea two weeks ago and a 52-14 win over Clinton County Friday night.
Williamsburg rolled up 512 yards of offense with 383 yards of that coming from sophomore quarterback Logan Hamblin. Hamblin, replacing the injured senior quarterback Ethan Powers, had five touchdown tosses on the night.
Senior J.P. Payne had 14 catches for 187 yards and three touchdowns while Kevin Hoffman had three catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns.
A third player over the century mark was running back Travis Thomas, who had 16 carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns.
“I thought we played well, both offensively and defensively,” said Williamsburg Coach Jerry Herron. “Hamblin did a very good job out there tonight.”
Williamsburg is 4-3 on the season, but 4-1 when it comes to teams within their own size. They were beaten 55-8 by Hazard, but have lopsided wins over Jellico (68-22), Harlan (32-14), Berea and Clinton County.
The Yellow Jackets scored the first time they had the football and never looked back. The opening drive started at the Williamsburg 20-yard line. The Jackets put together an eight-play drive that ended with Payne scoring on a 22-yard pass from Hamblin with 7:48 in the quarter.
Clinton County kept the ball for eight plays, but only gained 14 yards when they had to punt from their own 44-yard line. Williamsburg took over at their 30-yard line and eight plays later Thomas scored from four yards out. Thomas added the extra point to put the Jackets ahead, 14-0.
Williamsburg added a third touchdown in the opening period when Clinton County fumbled three plays later. Dylan Abner recovered for the Jackets. A penalty and a couple of incomplete passes slowed the drive.
A 29-yard pass to Payne set up a first-down at the Clinton County 15-yard line. A penalty pushed the ball back to the 20-yard line and Williamsburg eventually faced a fourth down from the same spot. Hamblin hit Payne on the final play with 15.6 seconds remaining. Hoffman added the extra points and the Yellow Jackets owned a 22-0 lead.
Williamsburg added two second quarter touchdowns, a 74-yard pass to Hoffman with 10:29 in the quarter and a 39-yard run by Thomas with 2:29 left in the half.
Clinton County got on the scoreboard midway through the quarter after a Williamsburg fumble gave the ball to the Bulldogs at the Jackets 35-yard line.
Hamblin and Payne connected on a 25-yard pass play in the third quarter for a touchdown and Hoffman caught a 44-yard throw by Hamblin to give the Jackets a 52-6 lead and put the mercy rule into effect.
Herron sent in his second and third units to finish off the game. Matt Staton scored late in the game and Gavin McWhorter added the extra points for the final margin.
Williamsburg hopes to take the momentum over the last two weeks into their district game with Campbellsville Friday night. The door is open for a big win over the Eagles. “Now, we just have to walk through that door,” said Herron.
